After overcoming a 12-point second-half deficit to win at Memphis this week, Rice heard a few golf claps and saw a mass of shrugs.
“People now expect us to win the high-major games,” Rice said. “We’re still a mid-major school. It’s still a surprise when you can win these games. That’s why they pay us money to come play them. Let’s not lose where we are and who we are. We have a very good team, but we’re not in the Big East or the ACC. We’re in the MAAC.
“After the game I started hearing that Memphis isn’t a high-major. OK, they’ve just been in Final Fours. Let’s go back and ask [former coach] Dana Kirk if it’s a high-major or Tyreke Evans or Derrick Rose or all those kids that [John] Calipari had. … It wasn’t a big ripple, but it was a big ripple in our locker room and it was huge for our kids. … Now we do it a few times and it’s no big deal. To me it’s a huge deal and I thought we played better in that game than we did in most of our wins against high-majors last year. But that’s OK. People don’t need to recognize it. We’re happy that people expect good things from us, but we have our heads very low and we’re just trying to work to the top.”
