The civil war was one. It needed to be fought. Secession and slavery needed to be stopped.
If you want to see an unnecessary war, read about WWI. Europe commits suicide (this time without the muzz invasion).
Lincoln presided over perhaps the most tumultuous times in our history. He was as great president.
