an Open Primary where the top 2 'vote getters' for any office (other than President) are represented on the ballot. This was the 1st national election under these new rules. As a result, Republicans were not on the ballot for US Senator and many other offices. Due to that, many Republican voters stayed home and didn't cast a ballot since they could not influence any elections....

Evidence of that phenomenon was seen clearly in Orange County where HIllary won the election marking the 1st time since FDR that OC voted for a Dem President. The reason for that was not a sudden shift of OC to Democrat.. it was a lack of interest in OC Republicans to vote.
