I just don't understand

I can understand how a player would be sharper some nights than others, more dialed in one night than the next, hyper-focused one night but not another.
But I don't understand not being able to jump for a tip-off. It's not like you're not expecting the toss.
It's sort of like being handed the ball at the free throw line and failing to shoot it.
Not failing to make a free throw, failing to shoot it.
