The car Markieff Morris wrecked in a non-injury, two-car accident Sept. 13 belonged to teammate Tyshawn Taylor rather than former Jayhawk Scot Pollard, Kansas associate athletic director Jim Marchiony and Pollard said Wednesday.
According to a Lawrence Police report, the accident occurred at 1:14 a.m. at the corner of 17th and Tennessee streets when the 1997 Chevy Tahoe that Morris was driving struck the rear passenger door of a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. The police report also indicated the Tahoe driven by Morris belonged to Pollard, who moved back to Lawrence after a lengthy NBA career. WHB-AM (810) reported Wednesday afternoon on its Web site that the car belonged to Pollard. If that were the case, Morris' use of the vehicle could constitute an extra benefit in the eyes of the NCAA.
Pollard told The Capital-Journal he sold Taylor the car in August. Marchiony said Kansas passed the transaction through KU's compliance office.
"It's Tyshawn Taylor's car," Marchiony said. "Tyshawn Taylor bought it from him in a transaction that was documented in our compliance office.
"There's nothing illegal about any of this."
Pollard corroborated that Wednesday evening.
"I sold the car to Tyshawn in a completely legitimate transaction," Pollard said. "You have a certain amount of time to register the car in your own name and apparently he had some kind of accident in that window and apparently he hadn't had a chance or hadn't gotten around to registering it in his name. That's the end of the story as far as I'm concerned."
