The SC did not rule that the United States is a Christian nation. Brewer's personal views were his own. For the U.S. to be "ruled", as you said, a Christian nation, then whether we are a Christian nation must have been litigated and before the court. It was not in Trinity.
What was litigated was whether the Contract Labor Act applied to clergy and the SC held that it was not the intent of congress to include clergy (of any sort) in this act. It has been cited in future opinions with respect to legislative intent. Some justices follow "textism", which means if it's not in the four corners of the statute, you can't read additional meaning in to it.
By the way, this is the court being one of dem librul activist things.
I realize that people like David Barton like to cherry pick quotes or even make them up and then mislead people. I only say that in case you get your information from the likes of him.
