climb upon the highest horse available and pontificate and lecture nominees. They either excoriate them for a sentence uttered thirty years ago or laud them for their good work on behalf of our great nation.
For SCOTUS nominees, same thing.
Gotcha questions and evasive answers. Or supportive statements with grateful responses.
The nominees must then lie about their beliefs, pretend to have changed or evolved as liberals do, so to be acceptable at this time.
Rick perry said he no longer believes the DOE should be abolished. I like perry, but really...?
We get speech making by sanctimonious, self righteous senators looking to their own next election and we get lies, obfuscation and spin from nominees.
We learn very little.
How about this:
Nominee: Senator schumer, i will be damned if i am going to sit quietly and be lectured on ethics and honesty by someone like you, who said on july 11, 2002.... and then said the exact opposite in a speech before union members in denver on october 23, 2011. I believe what i believe. The president supports and agrees with me. If you don't agree, that is your prerogative, but spare me the lectures until you are morally equipped to deliver them.
You will certainly vote against me. Fine. You will pretend to go through a thoughtful, exercise to determine what is in the nation's best interest when really, your exercise to the extent one, is needed is to determine how to sink my nomination and damage the president in the process.
If you have questions, i will answer them. You will likely not agree with me. Vote against me for whatever reasons you can muster, but spare me and the american people the hypocrisy and deceit from someone who has employed both for thirty years in this body.
........
The press would pounce. Duh. If an R nominee said that. Not dignified. Bad temperament. The same statement from a socialist nominee would be feisty, tough minded and no nonsense. Refreshing.
But i'll betcha that the weasels on the committees like al franken would think twice about gotcha questions to the nominee if the nominee fought back with some data from the past statements from the distinguished senator from minnesota.
I'm sick of the alleged comity in the senate. I'm sick of the "World's greatest deliberative body" a name likely given to itself, pretending that the truth is something to be exploited, edited and manipulated for the sake of their own election rather than the good of the nation.
