Why did you oversimplify my point? Did I say the police are "the offending party in all cases"?
What I said is that the burden for doing things right falls on the police since they enjoy a public trust. Taxpayers pay their salaries, they're vested with the legal authority to take life if the situation calls for it, thus they have to be beyond reproach. Idiot civilians are definitely part of the problem, but they're not vested with any kind of public trust.
Therein lies the difference between the police and the people they're paid to serve.
As I never expected public support to be automatic when I was in the military, my support for the police is not automatic. While I'm obligated to remain aware of the challenges they face, I will not accept inappropriate or corrupt behavior, nor should they.
