And by ‘this’, I don’t mean our program falling apart and the de-emphasis of men’s basketball by MU. That is Mike Alden’s fault. Kim simply got promoted considerably beyond his competence and doesn’t possess any of the necessary skill sets to succeed in this role.
But MU becoming the worst program in the nation and the overwhelming apathy where it is nearly impossible to even care about the outcomes of games anymore is 100% Kim’s fault. Midway through SEC play last year it was completely concluded that he was not going to succeed here, and that he was not able to bring anything to the table to try and reverse the trajectory or have any answers. We passed the recovery point then where there was even a 1% chance that this was ever going to work. Nobody knows that better than Kim Anderson.
Because of the unfortunate timing of circumstance, nobody was in a position to fire him because of all of our AD and university leadership turnover last offseason. The only one who had the power to save MU basketball was Kim by voluntarily stepping aside, admitting his shortcomings, and doing what was best for the program. Because of the self imposed penalties, we were the only program in the entire nation that didn’t play a conference tourney and could have had a jump on everyone else in our coaching search, the roster was not yet entirely decimated, the APR hits not yet conclusive, and the fan apathy not yet at 100%.
Yet he decided to return this season to make another $1 million plus dollars, schedule a European vacation, and finish MU basketball off as a legitimate program once and for all. There was no chance before this season even started this wouldn’t be the worst season in program history. There was no hope, no way we could be reasonably competitive, just a complete wasted season from the outset. We are waaaay worse off now than we were last offseason. I don’t blame Kim for not being able to do the job (although it would be nice if at least once he took some kind of ownership instead of always blaming others), but all of the destruction since the end of last season in 100% on him. It was all preventable, and he knowingly damaged the program further by not stepping aside when it had been proven conclusively that he couldn’t do it.
