It just depends on which craze being cheered for by which group of people.
Folks aren't interested in rights, or even freedom. They are interested in specific privileges for themselves and denying same to those they disagree with politically.
And there is always a group in charge with the levers of governmental power just to appear to give them just that set of privileges while actually limiting individual freedom as much as possible
