after having watched it finally.

The good:

A win is a win, anywhere, anytime. It was a great effort for a team in a desperate situation trying to stay relevant in the discussion for an NCAA tourney bid. If we had lost this game and gone to 1-4 in the conference we would have no shot at all to get an NCAA bid, not with 6 tough games coming up. Remember folks, going .500 in the SEC will just get us to 18-12 overall, which is a solid NIT resume, at best. This team needs to be at least 9-7 or 10-6 in the SEC to even be in the discussion for a bubble team. So avoiding going 1-4 was important.

Michaelis played her best game of the year, from start to finish. For a streaky player that was outstanding. 19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 blocks, 3 steals. And zero turnovers.

The freshmen Chavis and Smith won the game for us. 12 points each, 8-9 combined shooting, 7-8 from 3. Without both of them we would have lost the game, despite Michaelis's heroics. My favorite play of the game was the slight Chavis ripping the ball away from a bigger Vandy player under our basket, then taking the ball all the way up court and dishing for a layup at the end of the 3rd quarter. The team exploded at that play.

The bad:

Sophie just disappeared and was not a factor. No I don't expect her to score 30 a game. I do expect a player of her caliber to not disappear during a crucial game. 7 points, 6 turnovers. In only 26 minutes because once again she can't, or won't, control her aggressiveness on the court. And yes that was a flagrant foul on her when she fouled out. It wasn't even close. She made it an easy call when she gave the Vandy girl an extra shove to the ground after the foul. Pingetons #1 goal should be to teach Sophie to tone down her aggressiveness and keep her on the court for 35-40 minutes a game. In that, Pingeton is failing miserably.

It was a nice win, a critical win, but it was by the skin of our teeth, against Vandy, which may be the worst team in the conference. But it only left this team barely breathing for an NCAA bid. This is going to be a much easier conversation to have after the next 6 games: TAMU, @ Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, @ Miss State, @ Tennessee. We are underdogs in every one of those games. We could easily go 0-6 in those games. I'm predicting 2-4, which will leave us at 14-11 overall and 4-7 in the SEC.

Then, with another NIT bid firmly in our grasp, we can talk about whether this is what should be expected from Pingeton after 7 years as head coach. Is this basically her ceiling?
