1. Contact guys like Marshall and Miller to see if they have a number. They probably don't right now, but you call and see.
2. You start calling young up and comers in the mid-major ranks.

These are the requirements you adhere to.

1. Nobody that has shown a chink in their armor. Nobody that had a hot stretch 5 years ago but hasn't been remotely consistent since. Example listed today: Thad Matta

2. No mid-majors that haven't won a conference title or been at least top 2 for 2-3 years running. Example: Shaka Smart

3. Prefer guys who appear to out-recruit their current program, but still show that they are coaching guys up.

4. Try to steer clear guys who have only been at their school for 1-2 years, unless they made a HUGE immediate impact and turnaround. Took a middler or worse to a conf title out of the blue. These guys can be risky, but are sometimes worth the risk. Better to take a risk on one of them than on a retread trying to regain lost glory. Keatts might be one of these guys, although he's now in year 3 which gives much more clarity.

5. Nobody that has already failed at a major program and not subsequently taken another major head coaching job and found success.
Example: Jeff Capel

Now, if guys like Miller or Marshall do have a number, then yet we better be prepared to start int eh range that you mention.
If we are onto the young up and comers, you can not start at $2.5 mil. That is unnecessary.
You can hire guys like Keatts, McCall, Wade, Musselman for closer to $1.5mil and you give them some incentives that can bump them on up for certain achievements. Winning 20 games. Winning 25 games. Making NCAA. Conf Title. Elite Eight. Final Four.
Then, in a few years if they are kicking ass you start bumping them towards $2.5 or $3 or even more to keep them competitive with other coaches achieving similar results.
If we hire any young guy and just give him $3, we have failed.
The list of guys that warrant starting at around $3mil and will come to MU is short.
