Don't forget that even after 3 players transfered upon him taking the job and we failed to retain the verbal committment of Punter we were still picked 7th preseason in the SEC. He retained Fuller, and through that decision also landed Fulford. We had a decent amount of talent, retained the incoming freshman, landed a very highly regarded Teki, and then brought in possibly the most amount of talent ever assembled in a single weekend on a recruiting visit to Columbia.
Except we lost our home opener to UMKC in front of only (at the time, now it seems huge) 7,000 people because we hadn't even put in an offense or any inbound plays. And then things completely unwound from there.
But while at face value of course the hire looks moronic and indefensible, there were at least enough inherited assets and support that would plausibly mitigate around his known weaknesses. I don't agree with the notion that from the outset Kim was predetermined to fail. Most of it was due to his shortcomings that were not known at the time and due to various decisions he made.
