a firing. He didn't "deserve" to be hired and therefore he doesn't "deserve" to be fired. He temporarily occupies an office and does a job for MU the best he can. The most honorable scenario would be KA resigning and Sterk thanking him for his service to MU and paying him his full contract.
But if KA won't do that then Sterk shouldn't hesitate and he need not feel bad or apologize for correcting a error in judgement by Alden and the MU boosters who advocated for KA.
For example, if upon taking the job Sterk had discovered that a plumbing contractor had been awarded the contract for constructing the foundation of the new softball stadium, then everyone would expect him to correct that error immediately and no one would talk about how the plumber deserved the opportunity to learn concrete.
