In KA's defense, he never pretended to be anything he wasn't. When Norm was fired, KA gave up on pursuing a path to D1. He was fine not being a D1 coach and developing his craft, skills and experience to coach at this level by pursuing new coaching opportunities elsewhere. He never took one single step that could have been construed as building a resume for a job like MU.

In many ways, he was to be commended for knowing his own limitations and recognizing the limited nature of his own ambition. There is nothing wrong with knowing who you are.

His true mistake, therefore, was saying "yes" when Alden offered the MU job. And while, yes, many of was would always say yes to a job that more than quadruples our annual income and assures our retirement in just a few working years at the end of our career, there is a ethical component to his decision that requires KA to uniquely own this mistake because of what was at stake: the well-being of his alma mater, the legacy of the coach who offered him a scholarship to MU and made his career possible, and his own legacy as a MU All-american and foundational building block of the program built by Norm Stewart.

Because he has accomplished a remarkable tri-fecta in just two short years -- 1. crippling the MU program in talent, NCAA sanctions, morale, attendance and ability to heal itself going forward; 2. tarnished the legacy of his mentor Norm Stewart; and 3. forever replaced his own legacy as a beloved "True Son" with that of a divisive, destructive, mumbling dolt -- KA is the one most responsible for doing what is the only Right Thing left to:

Announce his retirement immediately, to take effect at the conclusion of this season, and communicate his commitment to do nothing between now and then but work to retain the current student athletes and to promote the job and MU to boosters and prospective coaches by assuring them that he alone is making this decision. KA should immediately cease all recruiting efforts and energies.

Having missed the chance to do the right thing the first time, i.e. decline Alden's offer, KA can still do the right thing now and rescue some semblance of integrity in closing out this unfortunate episode in the history of MU basketball.
