Historically the word liberal or liberalism meant a belief in freedom and individual rights. The left hijacked the word to mean their ideals of wealth redistribution and social engineering.
More perversely is their definition of rights. They break up rights into two categories.
The first is "negative" rights. They define negative rights as those that are natural rights, in simplistic terms freedom from intervention. In other words those protected by limiting government power (freedom of speech, freedom of religion, etc)
Then their other category of rights, they label as positive rights. These, the left claims, are state enforced obligations. One of the latest being right to healthcare. State forced "charity and generosity" are positive rights.
Defining natural rights using a negative connotation, while defining state handouts in a positive connotation is nothing more than a sly way of trying to manipulate thought making the left agenda of growing government services and interference in our lives under a false label of "positive rights". Positive is usually associates with good and negative associated with bad.
This brings up the interesting case when "negative" and "positive" rights arise. A baker owning a private business, who for religious beliefs, cannot participate in a gay wedding. The "negative" right or natural right to freedom of religion is trampled upon by the state enforcing a "positive" right.
Frederic Bastiat said it best.
"M. de Lamartine wrote me one day: "Your doctrine is only the half of my program; you have stopped at liberty; I go on to fraternity." I answered him: "The second half of your program will destroy the first half." And, in fact, it is quite impossible for me to separate the word "fraternity" from the word "voluntary." It is quite impossible for me to conceive of fraternity as legally enforced, without liberty being legally destroyed, and justice being legally trampled underfoot."
The left is not liberal. They are authoritarian and abuse language in an Orwellian way in an attempt to control thought to further their authoritarian goals.
