The debt burden didn't really happen until they had to pay for the Vietnam War particularly after the Tet offensive. Congress kept kicking the can down the road. We then went into inflationary period and then an inflationary period with a recession to boot. There were so many things ( also Look at Nixon as well for social program growth) Please read more.
