emails, IF they were hacked, discovered the truth in an underhanded way and exposed it to the world.

But the truth is that Podesta and Hillary and Hillary's campaign were all themselves acting in an immoral and perhaps even illegal fashion and that is why the exposure of the truth was so damaging to her.

To me, that truth trumps, if you will, speculation as to whether or not it was the Russians who obtained the truth in illegal/underhanded fashion or whether it was someone else.
