The Whirl
St. Louis' most ribald register of fractious felons, cringe-worthy crimes and noirish ne'er-do-wells — the Evening Whirl — is the subject of a nationally known podcast.
"Criminal," operated by former National Public Radio producers and reporters, now is pushing a 16-minute podcast titled "Don't Let Me See You In The Whirl!"
The show calls out the Whirl lovingly for covering "crime in St. Louis with a style all its own, using alliteration and rhyme, and often omitting the usual crime-reporting words like 'accused' or 'alleged.'"
The cast includes an interview with Anthony Sanders, currently the owner of the paper started in 1938, as the "Night Whirl," by the legendary Ben Thomas. A former track teammate of Jesse Owens at Ohio State University, Thomas died in 2005.
"Criminal" is distributed through Radiotopia from PRX, a curated network of shows.
