total yards gained instead of points scored, the game would be played differently.

The election of a President is by Electoral College votes. If it was by popular vote, the campaign (and voting) would be entirely different. Trump and Hillary both (essentially) ignored California because it was not worth expending campaign money on a state that was 100% going to go Hillary.

I know of several dozen people (myself included) who did not cast a vote in the Presidential Election because no matter what we did, Hillary was going to win the state.
Likewise, many Hillary supporters in 'Solid Red' states may have done the same.
