We have two fundamental problems defensively, our pg and our post players are too undersized and foul prone. And we have no depth at either spot. Its incredibly easy for an opponent to get either in foul trouble and change the complexion of the game against us.
Because we don't extend pressure, can't protect the rim, and have no size our current defensive approach is absolutely the right way for us to play. Just need to try and stay fundamentally in front of people and be good on our rotations. But that assumes we continue playing low caliber opponents that don't really require double teams or create much of a matchup problem.
