There was a referendum on reforms, which the electorate rejected. The Prime Minister will probably voluntarily resign as a result. There may be another election to pick a new PM (if Renzi resigns as expected), but there was no candidate this time around.

Why this matters is that if certain parties take power in a subsequent election, Italy could leave the eurozone and possibly also the EU. This would further plunge Europe into economic chaos. Markets are down as a result of this vote.
