Talking about lost distilleries, last week I cracked open a 12 yo Killkerran, distilled by Springbank at the lost but resurrected Glengyle Distiilery in Cambeltown. It had an off putting metallic smell and taste, but the underlying complexity was there. I reluctantly added a bit of Lagavulin 8 yo that overwhelmed the metallic note, but it also killed the complexity. I decanted it into an old bottle of Ledaig and left it sit for a week, and that metallic aroma almost completely disappeared. I had the bottle of the Lagavulin ready just in case it was needed, but it wasn't.

Killkerran 12 is lightly peated and exquisite, but you can't really know for sure about any whisky until you finish a bottle, and I've only had two drams.
