He's a 'hero' in the same way all the big killer despots are heros - though his machinations were quite different, the result was the same.
There is a parallel timeline where the United States is the number one super power in the world, has no slavery, but never had a civil war to end slavery.
Lincoln was 'good enough' to create the civil war but not good enough to avoid it.
Similar to Truman really, in that way. Leaves us to constantly rationalize and defend the dropping of the bomb and lionize if not deify Truman when in fact he just executed one of the most heinous acts in human history.
