It used to be that America was composed of a series of social experiments called “States”. Originally, thirteen, now fifty ongoing experiments on how to run things, how to treat people, how to get things done. Successes and failures became evident and those cases that were successful tended to be followed and copied and those deemed failures tended to be avoided or changed. It was the process of “natural selection” at work in the social realm. It was working well with one glaring exception: slavery.

Whereas anyone could pack-up and leave a state one didn’t like and move to a state one preferred, that didn’t work for slaves. The Fugitive Slave Act made it legal (actually required) that run-away slaves be captured and returned to their “Masters” down-South. Slavery made that social experiment a fraudulent, cruel joke. The Civil War restored a modicum of free competition-at the cost of several hundred thousand lives, of course.

With the advent of Progressivism in the late nineteenth century, the whole idea of inter-state competition was thrown out the window. Their objective was to make state differences, advantages/disadvantages inoperative-everyone in every state was to be “equal”. They had all the “right answers” already of course, so there was no need to continue the social experiment. We’ve been on that trail for more than a century and it is starting to yield its awful results: social unrest, economic stagnation, totalitarian temptations, etc.

We could do worse –a lot worse- that to return to a condition were each state determined its own direction and speed-minus the slavery, of course. But that would have the same effect on Progressives as showing a cross to a vampire. Maybe Trump has the balz to do it. Most politicians are too afraid to try.

Great because its so true.
