The Catholic Church picked certain celebrations at those times to convert pagans. The logic being if they are celebrating at that time let them celebrate Christianity. The idea was to replace pagan celebrations with Christian celebrations. But since you don't celebrate I won't have to buy that 18 year old scotch I was going to get you.
