An academic coordinator does lots of things. They schedule classes for the student-athletes helping them get into classes that don't conflict with schedules and traveling.
They get them tutors if / when needed.
They might travel with the team to enforce some study hours, proctor exams.
They make sure they are remaining academically eligible - maintaining gpa, making adequate progress towards a degree, etc.
They also often act as a mentor to student-athletes, as they are someone within the athletic organization that has their academic interests in mind, not just performance on the field.
They are actually a very important part of an athletic department.
