why he's doing this.

He knows that that MSM will publish that Trump canceled the meeting, make up a spin, etc. - He's derailing the MSM at the cost of appearing small.

I'm sure he knows the trade-off.

I think it has served him enormously well to this point, but will have diminishing returns henceforth.
