Putin isn't a friend of the US, has significant imperial ambitions, and has considerable influence in Europe as their primary natgas supplier. It's the latter for which we ended up in Syria, which also wasn't surprising to people in my industry. If that's clairvoyance, so was the Wizard of Oz.
I look for someone who has diplomatic experience or other experience brokering a difficult deal with key allies/adversaries ... could be in business. For example, George Shultz was very effective in getting the world off the gold standard at Nixon's behest in lengthy negotiations, and so made a sensible choice for Secretary of State for Reagan. Albright had credible experience with the NSA and as ambassador to the UN for a few years before becoming Secretary of State.
Not seeing such experience in Romney. Also not seeing close political ties to Trump, at least implying trust.
