but is calling a black person a negro as bad as calling them a n*gger?

I'm curious; I didn't think it was bad (really at all actually, I just thought it was an old word) but a friend of mine on Facebook made a post saying she heard a white person call a black person a negro (I don't know the circumstances) and everyone was up in arms about it. All the comments were people being so shocked and saddened, I didn't have the balls to say "What's the big deal?" lol
