in any political discussion on actual substance and policy that does not quickly devolve into accusations of racism, sexism, bigotry, etc.

And I do think this has been going on for a while and is a very large reason Trump won. People of good will who support conservative or even moderate policies hit a point where they resent being accused of something they are not. And the left seems out of ideas anymore. They only accuse.
