Great effort. Still a young team learning how to close out games. Phillips, Puryear and Hughes are going to win some games THIS year. Woods and Nikko intend to contribute.
VanLeer/Walton - What is going on here? VanLeer plays nearly the entire game and shoots what, 3 shots? Walton comes in, instant turnover, and is otherwise a non-factor. I appreciate that VanLeer takes care of the ball, doesn't hog possessions, works on defense...that's fine, but not 30+ minutes fine. I'm not blaming VanLeer, in fact, there was no reason for Frankie to take tons of bad 3 point shots in the first half and VanLeer to have zero shots. Coach, if you're going to play VanLeer, then use him. We don't have the excess talent to just be wasting a position on the court for 30+ minutes. If VanLeer is refusing to compete, then play Jackson over him.
Unless something dramatic happens, Walton is not going to be a factor for us and will likely be gone after this season. Once Barnett hits the lineup, VanLeer will be playing under 20 min, and Walton under 5. It's fine. The best players should play, and right now CVL is outplaying Walton by a big margin.
The number one phrase that should have been leaving KA's lips in the timeout before Xavier's final 1 second possession should have been "Don't foul, don't foul, whatever you do, don't foul" This one is going to hurt real bad for Terrence, but he will absolutely never forget the critical errors he made down the stretch.
By the end of the season, with Barnett, this team could do some serious damage in the SEC tourney. Both Nikko and Smith are ahead of where I would have thought they would be, and Woods is playing hard. It sucks that Walton is such a dud and that CVL is just out there filling a spot. But Phillips, Hughes, Barnett, and Puryear are going to be handful for opponents, to say the least.
Very interested to see how the team responds after such a huge disappointment.
