Everyone is aware of the Blackhawks non preference & opposition, but that is precisely due to Trademark considerations.
In Chicago's case, Causes of Action for Infringement of their Trademark.
The owner & his staff of the Las Vegas NHL franchise were always aware of that from Day 1, but still sought some unilateral, preemptive, name protection which involved the name "Hawks" in an attempt to circumvent that if they had decided to pursue one of those options.
The League obviously preferred a name that did not conflict in any way, as well.
There are however team names that have commonality within Leagues, though, including the NHL.
