Hillary Clinton blamed her loss to Donald Trump on FBI director James Comey, who resurfaced suspicion surrounding her email server days before the election.
In a call with donors on Saturday, Clinton said that the emails halted any positive thrust her campaign had going into Election Day.
“There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful,” she said, according to the New York Times. “Our analysis is that Comey’s letter raising doubts that were groundless, baseless, proven to be, stopped our momentum.”
In July, Comey announced that the FBI’s investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information on a private email server had concluded and they would not press charges.
Then, eleven days before the election, the FBI director issued a letter that said the FBI had found new emails that appeared to be “pertinent to the investigation.” The investigation wrapped on Sunday before the election and also concluded that no criminal charges would be pressed.
Still, the controversy that never seemed to go away gave Donald Trump and his campaign ammunition in the final days leading to the election to cast doubt on whether Clinton could be trusted in the White House.
On Saturday, Clinton told the donors, “we dropped, and we had to keep really pushing to regain our advantage, which going into last weekend we had.”
Trump was elected the 45th president of the United States in a stunning upset, defying almost all major polls and predictions, and hundreds of endorsements from newspapers, magazines and websites, including this one.
