They are never called to religious lives, and their Master's mission was to bring down the religious elite of his day (amongst more important things).

all they are asked to do is to obey their leaders and pray for them in the hopes that they can lead quite lives.

If they were allowed to vote back then, I'm sure they would have been encouraged to do so, and they would have been choosing between Nero and Caligula. So basically, not much different from today.
