President-elect Donald Trump invited British Prime Minister Theresa May for a visit stateside in a Thursday morning phone call, the British Embassy confirmed Thursday.
"The Prime Minister and President-elect Trump agreed that the US-UK relationship was very important and very special, and that building on this would be a priority for them both," an embassy spokesperson said in a statement.
"President-elect Trump set out his close and personal connections with, and warmth for, the UK. He said he was confident that the special relationship would go from strength to strength."
May is herself a newcomer to her nation's top post, having taken over in July 2016 after Britain voted to leave the European Union.
She spoke to Trump about the importance of the partnership after the United Kingdom's July vote to leave the European Union and "highlighted her wish to strengthen bilateral trade and investment with the US,” the statement said.
And it directly quotes Trump calling the United Kingdom a "very, very special place for me and for our country."
Trump has pointed to the U.K.’s vote, nicknamed the "Brexit," as indicative of the worldwide populist sentiment that helped pave the way for his election on Tuesday.
The president-elect flew to Washington on Thursday to meet with President Obama to discuss the transition of power.
