trade is generally good for all parties involved.
If we put big tariffs on goods coming into the country we could run afoul of treaties we have signed and be penalized by the World Court or whoever resolves such disputes.
We could also be subject to retaliatory tariffs from other countries that tax our exports to their countries. That type of tit for tat supposedly played a significant role in restricting trade that exacerbated the Great Depression to a large degree.
