the Financial Times about 4th generation nuclear plants.
A version by General Electric that ran on nuclear wasted that we are try hard to get rid of and spending a fortune to do so. They were much safer than current plants and could be built much smaller. They could be sized to replace existing coal plants and would extremely cost effective. If I recall the estimates were about 5 cents per Kwh.
They also would not melt down. If things went awry they would just stop working. They would not melt down. The waste is even lower level than when it went in and is essentially useless for terrorists or anyone who would like to make nuclear weapons.
So they were very safe, very cost effective and they would help resolve our problems with nuclear waste from other nuclear plants and from the military.
But the government won't approve them. They discourage research in the area as well.
There's another version that uses Thorium which is very abundant and could last for hundreds of years even if put into widespread use. The military doesn't like it, though, because it does not generate waste that can easily be converted to weapons grade uses.
