Red states into purple and even blue a long time ok. They have done it by changing the demographics of the country. Some would have occurred anyway but it has clearly been accelerated.
Now repubs aren't just complicit in this, as being part of the establishment is the most important part, over being the party in charge in the establishment. You want the power and must maintain enough, even if in secondary role, to not get crushed.
The problem is that this is a very slippery slope. You saw it on both sides of the house in this election. Trump on repubs and Bernie on dems.
If the Bern movement, under a different candidate continues, all hell breaks lose on the establishment
