Weiner's laptop and came across what was evidence of another crime, they would be full entitled to use that and pass it on to the feds.
But think about it...how long ago was Weiner-gate? Well before Server-gate. But they apparently imaged and archived Weiner's machine as evidence in the sexting charges and the more recent issues may have had them taking another look at it.
The background I heard was the NYPD turned over the information to FBI agents and those agents threatened to leak the info if Comey didn't reopen the investigation as they are fed up with Comey being a puppet for Obama/Hillary/Lynch.
