"RULES OF ENGAGEMENT: The Tigers conducted a full scrimmage during practice Sunday, with SEC officials presiding over play. They provided an initial look at the rules changes implemented across college basketball this season.
The result was a ton of fouls. Anderson estimated there were as many as 70 in Sunday’s scrimmage.
Notably, the changes protect a ballhandler’s space and, according to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, prohibit defenders from restricting “an offensive player’s rightful space to make a basketball move.”
Ballhandlers “have this thing called the cylinder, which is like their little bubble. You can’t get inside of that,” Puryear said. “That’s one thing, as a basketball player, your first instinct is to be aggressive, so you have to be cautious of that.”
The rules also crack down on rebounding and loose-ball fouls.
“Based on what I’ve seen, there’s going to be a lot of free throws early,” Anderson said. “The thing I noticed the other day when we scrimmaged was a lot of rebounding fouls. A lot of pushing off from behind, a lot of backing a guy out to get a rebound.”"
