The 1948 pollsters started relying on the telephone for poll information. In 1948, that was still a luxury. People who could afford a telephone got called. The sample was extremely skewed to Republicans.

In 1980, if Realclearpolitics.com existed then, it would have shown, poll averages showed Reagan almost always with a comfortable lead.
