Read and react might work with exceptional athletes who can read and react quickly, but we just don't have those types of players on our defense. By the time we read and react, the QB has either completed his pass or the running back is already in our secondary.
What made Mizzou a great defense the last few years is a very disruptive front four that put pressure on the QB and still managed to disrupt many/most running plays. Why Odom went away from a proven scheme just to pacify his new defensive coordinator is beyond me. He would have been better off coaching the D himself.
