Collapse. Go figure.
Did Hillary Clinton Actually Say She Wants ObamaCare To 'Unravel'?
In an intriguing email released by WikiLeaks, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton appears to write that she is hoping for an "unraveling" of ObamaCare.
"But we have to be careful that the R version passes which begins the unraveling of the ACA," she wrote to senior policy advisor Ann O'Leary in September.
Several conservative news sites jumped on this line in her email, saying that it suggests Clinton was rooting for the Affordable Care Act to collapse.
Clinton's email came in response to a push by Clinton's campaign to come out in favor of repealing ObamaCare's "Cadillac tax."
This tax would impose a 40% surcharge on employer premiums above certain amounts, supposedly as a way to slow health spending by discouraging gold-plated health plans.
Unions opposed it from the start, since they've been engineering gold-plated plans for their members for decades. So Democrats put off implementation of the tax until 2018 to appease unions. Late last year, Congress voted to delay implementation for two more years, after the Senate had voted 90 to 10 to repeal it altogether.
Clinton's campaign advisors were pushing Clinton in September to come out in favor of repeal.
Ever the bold politician, Clinton wrote in response that she could support the repeal "given the politics now w bipartisan support including (New York Sen. Charles) Schumer," with the proviso, she wrote, that "revenues would have to be found" to make up for what would have been collected by the Cadillac tax.
Clinton went on: "I'd be open to a range of options on that. But we have to be careful that the R version passes which begins the unraveling of the ACA."
So did she mean what she wrote?
The idea that Hillary would be rooting for ObamaCare's failure isn't far-fetched. As we noted recently, there has long been speculation that Democrats designed ObamaCare to fail so they could "fix" it with a single-payer system.
And, in fact, Clinton and company have been using ObamaCare's recent failures to push for a "public option" in the ObamaCare exchanges. This would create a Medicare-style plan that would compete with whatever private plans are left in the exchanges.
Liberal Democrats hoped to get the public option when ObamaCare first passed, precisely because they saw it as a steppingstone to single-payer health care.
In addition, Clinton wants to open up Medicare to people starting at age 55 and continue to expand Medicaid, both of which would move millions more people onto government health plans.
Plus, another email exposed by WikiLeaks shows her praising Canada's single-payer system, as well as her belief that it's OK to say one thing in public and other in private.
But, alas, it appears as if Hillary may just have been typing too fast. What she may have intended to write was be careful about the R version because it would unravel ObamaCare.
That seems evident in the follow-up emails.
Jake Sullivan wrote back to Clinton saying: "Your point on R version is key. Our Bernie contrast rests on defending ACA, so crucial to cast this as a fix and to be on the lookout for R efforts to make this a Trojan Horse for broader dismantling of the ACA."
Still, Clinton should be asked about this email and what her real intentions are with her plans to "fix" ObamaCare.
