As a Politico rep told the Daily Caller, that's standard, albeit the lazy way to do it by copying text into an email instead of calling (hence "hack").
This happens in one form or another pretty much everywhere that cares about accuracy. (Worth noting, then, which publications cry foul here.)
Confirming facts with sources is expected of every journalism student at Mizzou. Thrush is guilty of doing it the easy way. But there's nothing here beyond that.
