I think it has more to do with the effort involved in work.

For example, college educated people tend to have "easier" jobs. While they're generally mentally taxing, they're not physically tough. You have a ****ty day, you drink a glass of Merlot.
The less educated folks that still make a decent living banging tin on someone's roof, the guy that works on a construction site building houses, assuming they're making okay money tend to go Republican unless they're union. When they have a ****ty day they have their wife rub the cricks out of their back and drink a six pack.
It's about how much actual effort it takes to make your money and how little you think the government should take.
It's all about taxes and the amount of work that goes into your money going to the government.
If you come up with the next great technological advancement after three years of hard work, giving up 30% of your income doesn't seem like that huge a deal.
