Donnie never really ran a campaign. Did you fail to see that there was never any effort to set up a national infrastructure or even the semblance of a ground game. It is impossible to compete at this level without that.
Yet, Donnie never set one up.
What he DID were Rallies. He did lots and lots and lots of rallies. And you can bet your bottom dollar he is making money. It was like a rock-band celebrity tour. But a serious effort to be ELECTED. It doesn't appear that it was ever that.
As he has conned and conned and conned folks for years with his BRAND. He did it this time in politics. THE TERRIBLE part about this is that the rubes in this case, as despicable as some of their traits might be from xenophobia to violence to racism to Islamophobia - they actually believed the guy was genuine. And he was conning them the whole time.
