It's actually very routine internationally to admit to crimes when:
1) sleep is withheld - they were interrogated for 48 straight hours.
2) it is STRONGLY implied like in this case that a confession will mean it all goes away.
It's very common for people to admit to crimes they couldn't possibly have committed. In this case, there was no evidence expect their confession which was coerced after withholding competent legal council and parental supervision during the interrogation.
