I am a creature of habit. I know what I like and have a hard time finding reasons to change. That being said this is what I can tell you.
The Chimes is a great place for a beer, but the food is awful. Acme Oyster House is just as bad.
For Friday night try Roberto's River Road Restaurant in Sunshine, Louisiana. It is just a few miles south of Baton Rouge. Make a reservation. Another good Cajun seafood place is Pat's Fisherman's Wharf in Henderson. It is about a 45 minute drive west of Baton Rouge.
If you want to keep it closer to your motel then Mikes Anderson's Seafood. Some people call it a tourist trap, but I do not care. I think the food is very good. Be prepared to stand in line. Another place is Phil's Oyster Bar that recently reopened. I have not been there but hear that it is very good. I loved the old Phil's Oyster Bar.
My favorite watering hole in Baton Rouge is the Pastime. It is an LSU institution with great pizza and poboy sandwiches. There is construction on South Boulevard so to get there take either Nicholson Drive from the south, or from the east take Government Street and turn south on St. Phillip Street. Roll up your windows and lock your doors on Government Street.
Next to Pastime is Brickyard South. I've never been there but know the guy who owns it. He has been very successful in the Baton Rouge bar scene.
You will probably also hear about Walk Ons. I've never been there either but am told it fits my assessment of the Chimes.
I hope this helps and that you enjoy your visit to LSU and Tiger Stadium.
ETA: Another place is George's for sandwiches and poboys. I like the Pastime better because of its history, but George's is pretty darn good.
