Wouldn't really call it an intentional hole in the zone.

The style Pinkel used was designed to keep everything in front of you, and yes, the middle was the softest part, but we still had linebackers with coverage responsibilities there.
The problem is that the Tampa 2 approach works best when you have someone like Derrick Brooks at linebacker (or for our purposes, Sean Weatherspoon). When your linebackers can't cover well, especially in four- and five-wide sets, the middle is going to get exposed.
